NightCap is a bedtime app for Android, made by Get Less Chaos. It has no account, no ads, and no analytics or tracking of its own, and it sends nothing to us, its developer: we don't run a server. A few things do go to Google, through Google Play services and Google Play. This policy lists every one of them, and explains what NightCap keeps on your phone, where, and for how long.
What NightCap keeps on your phone
- Your bedtime, day cutoff and snooze lengths.
- Which nighttime settings you switched on (dark screen, color, Do Not Disturb, brightness), how strong the dimming and screen filter are, and what your phone's settings were before bedtime, so they can be put back in the morning.
- Simple stats: nights completed, your streak, and snoozes.
- The date your free trial started, and whether you have unlocked NightCap.
- Whether a Google Play payment is still waiting to complete, and tonight's state (when bedtime starts and how many times you've snoozed).
Apart from the Google services described below, this stays on your phone. NightCap never sends any of it to us.
What leaves your phone, and why
- Your trial start date, through Google Play services. NightCap stores the date your free trial started in Google Play services' Block Store. If Google backup is switched on, Google backs it up to your Google account. On Android 9 or later with a screen lock (PIN, pattern or password) that backup is end-to-end encrypted, so not even Google can read it; on other phones it is protected by your Google account but not end-to-end encrypted. It is used only so that reinstalling NightCap, or restoring it onto a new phone, does not restart the free trial. It is also kept after you uninstall NightCap, while Google backup is on, for the same reason. Only NightCap can read it back: Google Play services checks the app's name and signing key. Google handles it under the Google Privacy Policy.
- Android backup. If Google backup is switched on for your phone, Android backs up everything NightCap keeps (the list above) to your Google account, as it does for most apps, so it comes back on a new phone or after a reinstall. On Android 9 or later with a screen lock this backup is end-to-end encrypted; on other phones it is protected by your Google account but not end-to-end encrypted.
- Purchases. NightCap learns from Google Play which of its products you own and whether the payment has completed, so it can unlock, and it sends Google Play the purchase confirmation Google requires. It never sees your name, email address or payment details. Google Play handles purchases under its own terms and the Google Privacy Policy.
- Technical logs from Google Play Billing. The Google Play Billing Library, Google's code inside NightCap that handles purchases, sends Google technical logs about its requests to Google Play, such as whether a request worked and any connection problems. With them go basic details about your phone and the app: model and manufacturer, Android version and build, language and region settings, time zone, your SIM's mobile network code, connection type (such as Wi-Fi or mobile), and NightCap's version. Like any internet connection, this also shows Google your IP address. Google uses the logs to improve the library and help with billing errors, and handles them under the Google Privacy Policy. They go to Google, not to us, over an encrypted connection.
NightCap has Android's internet permission only because Google's billing library adds it for the purposes above. NightCap's own code makes no internet connections. The Manage subscription and privacy policy links open in Google Play or your browser.
Permissions
NightCap always needs notifications (the bedtime prompt) and exact alarms (so bedtime is on time). It asks for the rest only when a setting you turn on needs it: Do Not Disturb or Modes access (to set the night), display over other apps (the screen filter, on Android 14 and older), and modify system settings (only if you turn on brightness dimming). It also uses run at startup (to re-schedule bedtime after a restart), vibration (the bedtime notification), and Google Play billing and internet access (used by Google's billing library). None of them is used to collect information about you.
How it is protected
NightCap's own data is kept in its private app storage, which other apps can't read. The trial start date in Google Play services can be read back only by NightCap. What goes to Google is sent through Google's encrypted services, and backups are end-to-end encrypted where described above. We never receive a copy, so we hold nothing of yours to lose or leak.
How long it is kept, and how to delete it
- On your phone: until you uninstall NightCap, which deletes NightCap's own storage. The trial start date kept by Google Play services is separate (see below) and is kept on purpose, so the free trial can't be restarted. Android's "Clear storage" button opens NightCap's own page, where you can reset your settings and stats. The trial date and purchases are kept there, so a reset cannot restart the trial or lose a purchase.
- The trial start date in Google Play services, and Android backup: Google Play services keeps the trial date on your phone, including across a reinstall while Google backup is on, and in your Google account's backup. Turning off Google backup deletes your backups, and you can also delete them from your Google Account. Google also erases a phone's backed-up data (except photos and videos) if the phone isn't used for 57 days.
- Google Play Billing's technical logs: kept by Google under the Google Privacy Policy. We never receive them and can't delete them.
- Purchases: kept by Google Play as part of your Google account's order history.
Because we never receive any of your data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side. If you have a question about your data, email support@getlesschaos.com.
Children
NightCap is made for adults and is not directed at children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
